The City Government of Manila is set to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Olympians Carlos Edriel Yulo and Ernest John “EJ” Obiena with a grand hero’s parade, honoring the outstanding performances of these two Manileños at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo, who made history by winning two gold medals in gymnastics in the world’s greatest sports spectacle, will be awarded P2 million cash incentives by the Manila City Government.
“Deserve yan ni Caloy, na isang proud Manileño, nag-aral sa Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School sa Malate, ilang beses naging pambato ng Maynila sa Palarong Pambansa, at nag-kolehiyo sa Adamson University dito sa Maynila,” said Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna.
“Nakaukit na siya sa kasaysayan sa pagkapanalo ng dalawang gintong medalya sa 2024 Paris Olympics. Ang kanyang nakakabilib na performance sa floor exercise at vault events ay nagdala ng matinding karangalan at saya sa Lungsod ng Maynila at sa buong bansa.”
Yulo’s victories in the floor exercise and vault events have etched his name in history as the only Filipino and Southeast Asian athlete to win two gold medals in the Olympics, bringing immense pride and joy not only to Manila but to the entire country.
Manila will not forget his other proud son, Obiena, a world-class pole vaulter.
Despite narrowly missing a podium finish, Obiena’s exceptional talent and sportsmanship were on full display as he achieved a commendable 4th place in the pole vault finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Recognizing his dedication and remarkable performance, the Manila City Government will give him cash rewards, too.
“Kinikilala ng Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Maynila ang kanyang pagsusumikap at bibigyan siya ng P500,000 bilang pasasalamat sa kanyang tiyaga at natatanging performance. Ang paglalakbay at mga tagumpay ni EJ ay patuloy na nagbibigay inspirasyon sa maraming batang atleta sa Maynila at sa buong bansa,” stated Mayor Lacuna.
Obiena, who hails from Tondo, Manila, attended Chiang Kai Shek College for high school and represented the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the UAAP. His journey and achievements continue to inspire many young athletes in Manila and across the Philippines.
Mayor Lacuna emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the hard work and triumphs of the city’s athletes. “Caloy and EJ exemplify what our youth can achieve through dedication, discipline, and community support. Their victories and unwavering spirit will always be a source of pride for the City of Manila.”
