Major roads in Metro Manila still impassable due to floods

Several major roads in Metro Manila are currently impassable due to flooding, caused by heavy rains from the southwest monsoon and Super Typhoon Carina, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported on Thursday.

As of 3:00 p.m, the Lagusnilad underpass in front of Manila City Hall is still flooded from the continuous heavy rains over the past two days. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is currently addressing the issue with anti-flood equipment.

Areas affected by floods include Ortigas Avenue Extension (SM East) and parts of Valenzuela City such as the Bypass Road, Bahay Kanlungan, Maysan, Deato Street, and Balangkas.

In Malabon, flooding is reported in Estrella, Gov. Pascual, Concepcion, Gen. Luna, and Del Pilar, rendering these areas impassable.

Furthermore, the MMDA reported flooding in the C-4 Road Tangos in Navotas City, caused by a damaged floodgate.

Lawmakers urged the DPWH and the MMDA to address the persistent flooding in Metro Manila.

They emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the effectiveness of government flood control projects despite substantial yearly allocations.

Some senators stated that the ongoing cycle of severe flooding in Metro Manila, leading to suspension of work and classes, deployment of frontliners for rescue and evacuation, and subsequent damage assessment, is unacceptable.

The senators also questioned whether the substantial budget allocated for flood control projects, amounting to billions, has been effectively utilized by the DPWH and MMDA.
