10 Taguig barangays formerly under Makati can’t vote for congressman — Comelec

Residents of the 10 barangays formerly under Makati City and now part of Taguig City will not be able to vote for a congressman in the coming May 2025 national and local elections, according to the Commission on Elections.

However, they can all still vote for mayor, vice mayor, and city council in the coming.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said affected voters are from barangays Pembo, Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, West Rembo, East Rembo, Pitogo, Rizal, Northside, and Southside.

He explained there is no law yet that states a new district is created there in Taguig.

“At the same time, the Comelec cannot include our countrymen in the 10 barangays in one district because the result of that will be changing the existing law that we have,” Garcia said.

“We cannot abolish the second district of Makati, so even if only three barangays remain there, it will still be a district. These three remaining barangays in the second district of Makati City—Guadalupe Viejo, Guadalupe Nuevo, and Pinagkaisahan, will not be abolished,” he added.

Comelec also instructed its Election Records and Statistics Department (ERSD) to create a new database of voters for Makati and Taguig.
