Clark Development Corp. (CDC) asked Metro Clark Waste Management Corp. (MCWMC) to comply with its environmental obligations as its service agreement nears its end.
CDC president Agnes Devanadera, in a letter dated May 28, 2024, requested a copy of MCWMC’s abandonment plan from the Environmental Management Bureau Regional Office 3 (DENR-EMB RO 3).
DENR-EMB RO 3 confirmed that MCWMC is required to submit such a plan, citing a provision in their environmental compliance certificate (ECC) that mandates submission 90 days before project abandonment.
The Clark Sanitary Landfill at Sitio Kalangitan in the Clark Special Economic Zone faces an uncertain future as the MCWMC contract nears expiry.
Meanwhile, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) revealed plans to transform the landfill into a more productive venture.
BCDA president and chief executive Joshua Bingcang sees the potential for job creation, estimating up to 30,000 jobs for Tarlac residents through the industrial redevelopment of the 100-hectare area.
BCDA met with Tarlac Governor Susan Yap and Capas Mayor Roseller Rodriguez to gain local support. Both officials expressed approval for the redevelopment plans, acknowledging the potential economic benefits for the province.
BCDA said it is also working with Tarlac local government units (LGUs) to address waste management needs during the MCWMC contract transition period.
Discussions are underway to explore joint efforts for modernizing waste management services throughout Tarlac.
