After gracing the music scene for over twenty years, Adjeng, or Adrienne Antoinette Sarmiento-Buenaventura in real life, is finally unveiling her debut album Unravel, a collection of five unreleased tracks and three singles that have introduced her music to the public.
In an interview with Manila Standard Entertainment, Adjeng delved into the essence of her music, describing it as a continuous unraveling of emotions and experiences. She reflected on the themes of love, pain, and hope that permeate her compositions, presenting an honest portrayal of life’s realities.
“The word unravel means unfolding or untangling woven threads, and revealing something that has been knit together. My music is constantly unraveling, and in the seasons of my life, I often ask myself, ‘When things unravel, what is our response?’” she shares in an interview.
Adjeng’s first album is like a love letter to her life experiences. She shares them through honest songs, being true to herself, and loving what she does with all her heart.
“I feel that the seasons of my life have been unfolding in recent years, and the best part about this unraveling is that it reveals the themes that come with each season – there’s love, pain, and a lot of hope. These themes don’t shy away from realities,” she added.
Despite the urging of peers, Adjeng deliberately held back from releasing an album until she felt the timing was right. This deliberate approach allowed her to infuse her music with the depth and substance of her journey and experiences.
Unravel, according to Adjeng, is her evolution as both a songwriter and vocalist. Embracing a diverse range of genres, she boldly experiments with her sound, resulting in what she describes as “Adjeng pop.”
“I don’t shy away from experimenting with different genres, I like drawing outside the line. The album has its pop roots but is a combination of different genres that surprises people when they hear my music,” she said.
The album’s five previously released singles include “Rollercoaster,” “More Than A Little,” and “Must Be Love,” alongside three newly recorded originals. Among these, “Still Kilig” stands out as a heartfelt tribute to Adjeng’s marriage, chronicling the enduring love and affection shared with her husband over the years.
From her beginnings in national songwriting competitions to her current endeavors as a multifaceted artist, Adjeng remains committed to inspiring and entertaining her audience. Beyond her musical pursuits, she has also made significant contributions as a writer, actress, and mental health advocate.
As Unravel makes its debut on digital platforms, Adjeng’s fans eagerly anticipate the soulful melodies and poignant narratives that define her distinctive brand of Original Filipino Music. With each note, she seeks to honor the legacy of music as a source of solace and spiritual rejuvenation, echoing the sentiments of Johann Sebastian Bach.
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Adjeng finds fulfillment in her roles as a devoted wife, mother of two, and an enthusiastic member of the BTS ARMY, embodying a life rich in creativity, passion, and tireless dedication.
