The Perpetual Help Altas Spikers formally sealed their fourth straight title after winning Game 2 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 men’s volleyball championship on Sunday, defeating the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in three sets, 25-14, 25-22, 29-27 at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City.
Multi-titled coach Sinfronio ‘Sammy’ Acaylar and his Altas tossers did not give the Generals a chance to extend the series to a Game 3 with the solid three-set triumph.
It was the 14th NCAA volleyball title of the Altas under the mentorship of Acaylar in the men’s division since he held the coaching post in 1985. Acaylar has also recorded the most titles in the men’s division since the NCAA was established in 1925.
The win reaffirmed the status of Perpetual Help as a dominant volleyball force with a good sports program, with its numerous titles in the men’s, women’s, junior boys and girls divisions as proof.
The Perpetual Junior Altas Girls also won the Volleyball Fiesta as they beat the Arellano University Lady Braves in a best-of-three finals to claim the season 99 crown.
Louie Ramirez was hailed as the league’s 2nd Best Outside Spiker and back-to-back season Most Valuable Player, while Jeff Marapoc was named Finals MVP.
The Rookie of the Year and 1st Outside Hitter awards went to Axel Van Book of San Beda University, while Freshman of the Year was Jun Edang of Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Adjudged as 1st Middle Blocker was Vince Himzon of Letran, 2nd Middle Blocker was KC Andrade, while Best Opposite Spiker was Ruther Abor of Emilio Aguinaldo College.
