GOVERNMENT agents assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) arrested a man after he claimed shipments of smuggled shabu worth more than P20 million at the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEX) in Pasay City.
The composite team from the Bureau of Customs, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group arrested the suspect, reportedly a Quezon City resident, after he claimed the package containing 3,000 grams of shabu at the post office on Monday.
Based on import documents, the package was shipped from Vancouver, Canada by a certain “Angel”.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, and the seized illegal drugs were turned over to the PDEA preparation of criminal charges over alleged violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act (Republic Act 9165) and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Law.
The same team recently intercepted smuggled shipments of kush worth more than P1.8 million, also at CMEC.
The contraband was shipped from the United States and consigned to various individuals residing in the provinces of Laguna, Pampanga, and Cavite.
Authorities said despite the government’s comprehensive anti-narcotics campaign, the international drug syndicates continue to use the country’s postal system to smuggle prohibited drugs.
Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio reiterates the agency’s commitment to preventing the entry of illicit goods into the country. He said they will continue to intensify border control and enhance its coordination with partner agencies to combat illegal drug smuggling.
He also emphasized the importance of joint efforts among law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety and security of the people.
