DOST supports gamet and sarakat industries in Santa Praxedes

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Santa Praxedes, held a dialogue to promote the development of science, technology, and innovation (STI) interventions supporting the gamet industry. The aim is to ensure the sustainable management of sarakat resources.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., along with Undersecretary for Regional Operations Sancho Mabborang and Regional Director Virginia Bilgera, visited the Santa Praxedes Sinag Gamet Gatherers and Processors Association. This visit was part of the agency’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) initiative, which aims to discuss potential STI solutions. These solutions are intended to inspire innovation, address societal concerns, and maximize the potential of Filipino crafts through STI assistance in the province.

Solidum encouraged the adoption of sustainable and eco-friendly practices to attract both international and local investment. He emphasized the agency’s strategic plan focusing on job creation, driving progress, and improving the quality of life for all.

As a result of the project’s implementation, processors at the firm have enhanced their post-harvest techniques and skills. Various training sessions have led to improvements in processes, extending the shelf life of gamet with the assistance of STI.

One significant impact of this livelihood intervention is that many employees are now able to send their children to school. The income generated by this firm supports family needs, aligning with DOST’s strategic goal of wealth creation.

Gamet thrives naturally in the marine waters of Santa Praxedes in Region 2, the only site in the region and the Philippines where gamet is gathered abundantly and consumed fresh or dried. Other areas with minimal production include Claveria, Sta. Ana, Calayan Island in Cagayan, and Burgos in Ilocos Norte.

This initiative has established a strong partnership between DOST and local government units in the province for the benefit of the community. Gamet is a traditional dried edible seaweed from Ilocos Norte and Cagayan.
