Knott breaks national indoor 200-m record

Filipino-American sprinter Kristina Knott has established another Philippine record.

The 28-year-old Knott, who saw action for the Philippines in the Tokyo Olympics, ran and finished fourth place in 23.57 seconds during the Category 10 finals event of the women’s 200-meter sprints in the Arkansas qualifiers at the Randall Tyson Indoor Center in Lafayette, Arkansas last Feb. 16.

Both surpassed Zion Corrales’ old mark old of 23.90 seconds in the Mount Pacific Sports Federation meet in 2020.

Knott’s record-breaking feat came as another Fil Am sprinter, Angel Frank also set a new national record-breaking time of 23.86 seconds, this time at the Bob Pollock Invitational, Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex, Clemson, SC last Jan. 27.

This is the second time that the indoor women’s 200-meter run record has fallen over the last two months.

Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association secretary-general Jasper Tanhueco took note of this after he received information on their performances. The PATAFA is in the process of verifying and ratifying the results.

The PATAFA is set to update its information on indoor competitions after the good showings of Knott and Frank.

During the competition that Knott joined, she was behind Team USA runner Madison Whyte, who took the gold in 23.01 seconds.

Jamaicans Neisha Burgher and Joanne Reid took the silver and bronze in 23.09 seconds and 23.19 seconds, respectively.

Knott later settled for the bronze medal in the 60-meter finals, in 7.35 seconds, which improved on the 7.42-second time she had in the heats.

With her feat, Knott is now the holder of two official Philippine national records, which included the outdoor marks in the women’s 100 meters and women’s 200 meters races.

The Orlando, Florida-based Knott distinguished herself when her 11.27 seconds broke the 33-year-old Philippine national record of 11.28 in the women’s 100 meters, set by Lydia de Vega at the 1987 Southeast Asian Games.

Knott also surpassed De Vega’s record by .01 second during the 2020 Drake Blue Oval Showcase in Des Moines, Iowa.
