Popular social media platform TikTok said it has removed more than 3.8 million videos in the Philippines from July to September 2023 due to community guidelines violations.
In a statement, TikTok said that 98 percent of the videos were proactively removed, 87% were removed before any views, and 95% were removed within 24 hours.
“We use a combination of technology and moderation to identify and review potentially problematic content, with penalties including removing videos and banning accounts for Community Guidelines violations,” TikTok said.
TikTok said it uses “a proactive approach” in crafting its Community Guidelines, which is available in English and Filipino, that adapt to the evolving digital landscape while dealing with emerging safety concerns.
It added that it has ongoing consultations with government agencies, diversity experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as several teenagers in crafting its guidelines.
“TikTok ensures that its policies align with local and global best practices and fosters diversity and inclusivity within a secure and positive digital space,” it said.
Further, TikTok’s Regional Safety Advisory Council (SAC) consults with groups of independent experts who assist in drafting “forward-looking policies and “processes” that address not only its current challenges, but also prepare for the upcoming issues that the industry will face.
“TikTok has over 40,000 safety professionals dedicated to keeping TikTok safe. This team includes thousands of moderators around the world to provide the platform with around-the-clock support to review content that may violate its policies,” it said.
