STRONG Group Athletics is proud to announce its representation of the Philippines in the prestigious 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, scheduled to take place from January 19 to 28, at the Al Nasr Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Bolstering the team’s roster for this exciting competition are seasoned veterans Dwight Howard, Andray Blatche, Andre Roberson, and McKenzie Moore.
Dwight Howard, 38, an eight-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, will serve as the anchor of Strong Group. Howard most recently showcased his talents with the Taoyuan Leopards during the 2022-23 T1 League Season.
Head coach Charles Tiu expressed his excitement for acquiring Howard, stating, “We pursued Dwight because we believe he can provide a significant defensive presence and contribute offensively. Andray Blatche played a crucial role in connecting us, and I’m grateful for the support from our owners Frank and Jacob Lao.”
Andray Blatche, 37, rejoins Tiu’s team after his last competitive appearance in the 2020 edition of the tournament, where he played a pivotal role in securing the championship for Might Sports.
Tiu is excited to reunite with Blatche, saying, “I’m excited to run with Dre Blatche again. We won the last time he played for me, and he’s eager to represent the Philippines once more.”
Andre Roberson, an eight-year NBA professional primarily associated with the Oklahoma City Thunder, is set to be the designated defensive stopper for the team.
Standing at 6-foot-7, the 32-year-old product of the University of Colorado is expected to play a crucial role against formidable opponents from the Middle East.
Tiu expressed his confidence in Roberson, stating, “Andre Roberson is known to be a workhorse and lock-down defender. I believe he can contribute offensively at this level, and his great team-oriented attitude will make him an excellent fit.”
McKenzie Moore, a mainstay in Tiu’s teams, adds further depth and experience to the roster.
The team is also proud to announce the appointment of Australia national team head coach Brian Goorjian as team consultant.
Goorjian, who recently led the defunct EASL team Bay Area to the 2022-23 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, brings a wealth of coaching acumen and experience to the team.
