Marcos raises gratuity pay for ‘heroic service’

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to approve an increase in the gratuity pay for Medal of Valor awardees highlights the government’s recognition of their heroic service, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said on Friday.

“Their show of courage in times of extreme danger while performing the task of protecting our people and state cannot actually be compensated, especially those who gave up their life,” AFP spokesman Col. Medel Aguilar said in a message to reporters.

The Medal of Valor is the highest military honor awarded for “conspicuous deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty that distinguishes the recipient from his comrades.”

“Their action is noble and beyond the call of duty,” Aguilar said.

In his speech at the AFP’s 88th founding anniversary Thursday, the President said the increase in the lifetime monthly gratuity pay for existing Medal of Valor awardees was based on the recommendation of the military and the Department of National Defense.

He said the awardees deserve to enjoy a higher monthly incentive for having exhibited bravery and heroism.

“This will provide our heroes with a tangible and meaningful reward, highlighting our commitment to support and honor our war heroes,” Marcos said.
