Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano backs the proposal to transfer the House of Representatives to the Bonifacio Global City (BGC), citing the city’s readiness to accommodate Congress.
Cayetano said the targeted area is a “strategic choice that attracts businesses, tourists, educational institutions, international organizations, and government offices.”
She believes that the move would be significant not only for her constituents, but also for visitors, congressional employees, and the general public.
Local officials also assured the public that the city government under the leadership of Cayetano, who also as a legislative representative of Taguig-Pateros district, is dedicated to ensuring a smooth and efficient relocation process should the plan pushes through.
Three congressmen filed House Resolution 1390 creating an ad hoc committee to study the establishment of a new building for the House of Representatives, and proposed that the chamber should move to the BGC for better communication and coordination of legislative work.
Authors of the measure—Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales, Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. and Quezon City Rep. David Suarez—asserted that with the Senate set to transfer to the BGC next year, the House should also consider moving to the same place.
The House resolution stated that lawmakers should consider “the accessibility of public transport through “efficient options and excellent connectivity” to major thoroughfares and other areas in looking for a new location for the lower chamber.
“Proximity to other government agencies, multinational corporations, leading local businesses, and tech start-ups should also be taken into account for access to different sorts of Filipinos from every walk of life,” the measure read.
The House of Representatives building is currently situated at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City, while the Senate is at the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) complex in Pasay City.
