President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday called on the public to emulate the heroism of Andres Bonifacio as the country observed the 160th birth anniversary of the Filipino hero.

In a speech delivered by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, President Marcos said Bonifacio was an ordinary Filipino who dedicated his life to the country.

“I invite everyone to emulate his heroism and love for the country, and to show these in our daily activities,” he said in Filipino in a speech at the Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City.

The President also hailed the nation’s unsung modern-day heroes, such as workers, police, military officers, medical practitioners, teachers, and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), citing their significant contributions to the country.

“Each of us has an important role in advancing the Philippines. We should all participate in activities that will enrich our culture, [and] develop the economy and society, especially now as we strive to promote a New Philippines,” the President said.

In closing, the President reminded everyone to treasure the freedom that Bonifacio fought and died for.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez joined the nation in commemorating Bonifacio Day.

He said Filipino revolutionary leader and Katipunan founder Gat Andres Bonifacio continues to be the country’s inspiration amid the various challenges that it is facing.

“In our celebration of Bonifacio Day, let us remember the spirit and sacrifice of Gat Andres Bonifacio,” Romualdez said.

“The courage and dedication he displayed in the fight to gain freedom continues to serve as our inspiration, especially in facing the challenges of the current times.”

Born on Nov. 30, 1863, Bonifacio is often dubbed the “The Father of the Philippine Revolution” and “Supremo.” He died on May 10, 1897.

Bersamin and Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo Malapitan led the rites to commemorate Bonfacio’s birthday.

Malapitan reminded everyone why there is a need to continue remembering Bonifacio, highlighting his role in the fight for freedom.

The local chief executive, however, was quick to point out that today’s fight for freedom has not ended and encouraged fellow Filipinos to emulate the examples set by the “Great Plebeian” in eradicating other social ills. With Maricel Cruz and Vince Lopez
