National University will bring in a new batch of performers when it seeks to retain its title in the coming 86th University Athletic Association of the Philippines Cheerdance Competition on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Most of last year’s cast are no longer around, and the new ones are familiar with the routines that new head coach Gab Bajacan wants them to do.
“They are still part of our program for the longest time, and they have been exposed to many competitions. And, it’s their time to perform,” said Bajacan, during Wednesday’s launch.
Last year’s NU team performed to a lively and synchronized “Cheer-obics.”
This time, Bajacan said they will unravel routines to the tune of Elvis Presley songs and make themselves relatable to the audience.
Coach Ghicka Bernabe recently stepped down as NU Pep Squad head coach after getting married and turned over her responsibilities to Bajacan.
The University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe is expected to challenge NU’s dominance, along with the Far Eastern University cheerdances, who landed third last season.
“We are thrilled to host the UAAP Season 86 Cheerdance Competition at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. This event is not only a showcase of the incredible talent and athleticism of our student-athletes but also a platform for schools to come together and celebrate the spirit of friendly competition,” said UAAP Season 86 Executive Director Atty. Rene Saguisag Jr.
Action begins at 2 p.m, with the University of the East Pep Squad setting the tone for a night filled with energy and excitement, being their first to go on the mat.
Also competing are the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, the Adamson University Pep Squad, University of the Philippines Pep Squad and the De La Salle University Animo Squad.
