The Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals seek to have their best season ever in the 99th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.
This year, the Generals showed that they can compete, having claimed a series of upset wins by beating three powerhouse teams to post an impressive 3-2 start.
“Every game our character is being tested. ‘Yung last two games namin, we didn’t finish well, especially our last game against Mapua,” said EAC coach Jerson Cabiltes.
The EAC coach is upbeat about the Generals’ good fortunes this season, after they posted an 83-76 overtime shocking of the Lyceum Pirates last Wednesday, to move up to fourth spot with their 3-2 win-loss record.
The Generals will clash with the Arellano Chiefs at the FilOil-Ecoil Arena and go for another important win.
Beating the Chiefs will allow the Generals to rise up to share of third place with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
The Generals’ surprise victory ended the six-game win streak of the Pirates.
The Pirates played without the services of Shawn Umali, who was suspended for one game following his technical foul and ejection in their game against San Beda University.
Despite the setback, the Pirates still lead the standings at 6-1.
Cabiltes took notice of the game of King Gurtiza when he chipped in 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three blocks for the Generals.
“King is an all-around player. He’s aggressive on offense, but the good thing is he’s crashing the boards and he’s playing defense,” said Cabiltes.
