The Department of Transportation asked the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) to immediately file charges against security screening personnel found involved in a Sept. 8 incident of baggage theft at Terminal 1 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista expressed frustration and dismay over the incident at NAIA especially as the government was trying to attract foreign investors who may want to operate and maintain the country’s main gateway.
Bautista ordered Undersecretary for Legal Reinier Yebra to assist in filing the complaints against those determined to have connived in stealing from the hand-carried bag of a Chinese passenger.
The OTS, after concluding its investigation, recommended legal and administrative actions against the security screener caught on CCTV apparently swallowing the stolen $300 to hide the evidence.
Bautista authorized imposing the maximum penalty to those found guilty to demonstrate the agency’s determined push to rid NAIA and other attached agencies of scalawags.
