The Philippine Sports Commission stands to receive a higher allocation in 2024 as several lawmakers were apalled by the drastic cuts made on its proposed budget that left it with a mere P210.44 million in the National Expenditure Program that was submitted to the House of Representatives.
From a budget of P2.31 billion in 2023, the PSC was given P210.44 million in the proposed 2024 national government budget, almost one-tenth of this year’s allocation.
The PSC funds sports programs and trainings for national athletes.
“We found out that the budget for the PSC was slashed so we’ll try to push it to get more,” said Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez, a former fencer who represented the Philippines in several international games.
“The government is trying its best to give the support that it can, considering the limited budget that we have, we’re trying to support all our athletes,” Gomez added.
Gomez, however, did not reveal the amount that he wants to add to the proposed PSC budget but said it will be substantial.
