Due to its location in the Pacific Typhoon Belt, an average of 20 storms enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year. While some cause mild rains, others bring about strong winds and rainfall that cause significant damage. The agriculture industry is also vulnerable during inclement weather because crops and livestock rely heavily on their natural resources to grow.

Fortunately, with some preparation, farmers can keep their properties and elements safe from typhoons. Here are some tips on how to ensure a farm’s safety during the rainy season:

1. Listen to the news

One of the first things to consider is gaining the appropriate information about the weather and using it as a guide. Learn when the storm will hit and where. Most storms usually occur in specific regions before moving to another area in the Philippines. Another thing to note is the wind speed and rainfall of the typhoon or low-pressure area to make necessary arrangements before it makes landfall.

2. Secure farm structures, equipment, and electrical lines

Most farms have buildings and structures that house or support their crops and livestock. Before a storm, check these structures for damages like leaks, cracks, and more to make ample repairs before the storm hits. It’ll prevent long-time deterioration from water damage and keep crops or animals inside the structure safe.

Another thing to check is electric lines. Ensure that none are compromised, which could electrocute people or animals when the rain pours. On the other hand, keep farm equipment and machinery away from the open to avoid damage from the rain.

3. Invest in climate-resistant crops and other technology

Water logging can cause significant damage to crops, especially to those that aren’t sturdy against excessive rain. Fortunately, there are some ways to protect crops from the weather. For instance, planting cover crops can keep the rain from reaching the soil and the crops’ roots. Cover crops help manage soil erosion, soil fertility, and soil quality.

In the meantime, store harvested crops in a cool, dry location to keep them fresh.

4. Look after yourself

Farming can sometimes be challenging, with the rainy season adding more difficulty. But during this time, remember to prioritize your health. Dress appropriately to keep the cold and the illnesses that come with it away. Stock up on medicine for yourself and keep a note of emergency numbers handy to ensure your safety.

These tips are only some safety measures farmers can implement during the rainy season, as others take on more extensive or simpler approaches. Nonetheless, their priorities should always revolve around their safety and that of their crops, livestock, and property.
