The Bureau of Internal Revenue said Thursday tax collection grew by almost a tenth in the first five months of 2023 to attain its target for the period.

It said that from January to May, it collected P1.056 trillion, up by 9.94 percent, or P95.454 billion, from the same period last year. Compared to the bureau’s collection target, it was P1.331 billion higher.

The BIR was tasked to collect P2.599 trillion in 2023, representing an increase of 10.95 percent, or P256.444 billion, from the previous year.

“With the intensification of the bureau’s tax enforcement activities, specifically on the campaign against sellers and buyers of fake receipts, we are confident that the BIR can attain, if not surpass, its annual collection target this year,” said BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr.
