With the return of competitive golf worldwide, Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club chairman Robert John Sobrepeña expressed excitement as the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines chose the club as host venue for the 43rd Queen Sirikit Cup.

“On behalf of the Manila Southwoods Board, I am very happy to host the Queen Sirikit,” said Sobrepeña, who with Queen Sirikit Cup Secretary General and one of the co-founders Rae-Vadee Suwan, Thailand Amabassador to the Philippines Tull Traisora, R&A Asia Pacific Assistant Director Nick Shan, and National Golf Association of the Philippines secretary general Bones Floro graced the opening ceremonies yesterday.

Sobrepeña said that now is the perfect time to have a major tournament for ladies and support for women’s golf.

“Manila Southwoods has always been supportive of international amateur events. Last year, we had the Nomura Cup for men, now we have this. I believe that Asian women have a lot of chance of competing at the highest level,” he also said.

The main competition begins Tuesday and will run up to Friday at the difficult Masters’ course, Southwoods’ premier layout designed by Jack Nicklaus, which has been challenging even to the seasoned golfers.
