Don’t let ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Champion Mikey Musumeci’s boyish looks fool you.
He might look like someone you would bump into at a comic book store, but when it comes to competition, he’s someone who gets things done. Just ask Gantumur Bayanduuren.
Bayanduuren found out the hard way after Musumeci tore the former’s ACL, MCL, and meniscus, while also breaking his foe’s ankle, during a leg lock attempt during ONE Fight Night 6: Superbon vs. Allazov at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
No one thought Bayanduuren would survive the submission attempt on January 14, especially since Musumeci had it locked in, but the Mongolian didn’t submit. It came at a cost, however – his entire leg to be exact.
It’s not something that Musumeci is proud of, as he hoped his opponent would’ve just tapped.
“I’m kind of nauseous right now. I’m really sick to my stomach. I never felt someone’s leg explode like that in a match,” Musumeci said.
“I’ve been training for 22 years. I never broke someone’s leg that much. I’ve broken a lot of legs, but that leg exploded. I didn’t know what to do, and it’s just disgusting and gross. I really wish he tapped.”
After all, Musumeci believes there’s no need to have ligaments torn apart and joints dislocated in competition.
“When I compete, I don’t want to hurt anyone. I want them to train tomorrow. You know, I don’t want to hurt my opponent at all. So, I really didn’t like being put in that position where I had to break his leg,” he said.
For those who’ll challenge Musumeci in the future, this match should serve as a warning: Breaking bones isn’t something Musumeci wants to do, but he’s certainly capable of it.
