Veteran shooter Amparo Teresa Acuna surpassed a Philippine national record she made five years ago during Friday’s qualifiers for the national team at the PNSA-PSC Shooting Range at the Philippine Marines Barracks in Taguig City.
The 25-year-old Acuna tallied 582 points in the women’s 50-meter rifle, 3-position event, smashing her own mark by a point.
“I really didn’t expect anything po,” said Acuna in an interview with the Manila Standard.
Her previous record was 581, and Acuna did it in the 2017 Southeast Asian Shooting Association championships in Subang, Malaysia.
Back then, she settled for the bronze medal, and it was better than the 580 which Acuna did back in 2014.
Her coach Julius Valdez said this will be part of her preparations for the 2023 Asian Games in Guangzhou.
Acuna joined Jayson Valdez in making it to the national pool tryouts after he shot a 557 3.
She just came from Cairo, Egypt, for her 1st ISSF World Cup and for a chance to make the minimum qualifying score in her bid to qualify and prepare for Paris 2024 Olympics,
While in Cairo, Acuna shot 617.8 in the 10-meter Air Rifle 60 category, 617.8, made 613 in the 613 and 574 and 50meter-3 positions.
To get ready for the Asiad, Acuna will join a meet in January 2023, which is the International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup Rifle/ Pistol competition in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In March, Acuna will see action in the ISSF World Cup Rifle/ Pistol shoot fest in Bhopal, India. Last year, Acuna reset the national mark in the 10-meter 3-position air rifle event
Acuna scored 1152 points to tie the national men’s record set by Rodolfo Aquino Jr in the 90s.
Acuna accumulated 1149 points, to outdo her previous national mark of 1146 in the 2019 Doha Asian Championships.
