Explosion topples tower, causes blackout in parts of Mindanao

An explosion toppled a tower of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines in Lanao del Norte, causing blackout in several parts of Mindanao.

The Baloi-Aurora 138-kV transmission line tripped at 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 24, resulting in manual load dropping to prevent overloading of the remaining line.

NGCP said the tripping was due to the bombing of Tower No. 8 of in Sitio San Isidro, Barangay Bagombayan, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. 

The company said an unidentified individual was found at the scene with fatal injuries.  It was unclear if the wounded person was related to the incident, it said.

“Responding authorities confirmed that lawless elements used IEDs to bomb the said tower. The incident is under investigation,” NGCP said.

Areas affected included Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga del Norte including Dipolog City and Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Sur including Pagadian City and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte.

NGCP said the repair of the tower would start as soon as the area was secured by authorities.
