Body of Furigay arrives in Lamitan as tributes pour

The wooden casket carrying the remains of former Lamitan, Basilan mayor Rosita Furigay arrived in her hometown on Sunday morning.

The former mayor was gunned down a week ago at the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City.

Her husband, Lamitan mayor Roderick Furigay, arrived with her remains along with some relatives, and as the convoy passed by Lamitan’s streets, some of Furigay’s supporters stood by the roadside carrying tarpaulins calling for justice, ABS-CBN News report said.

Nearly a week after the shooting incident, the Furigay family has been reunited. Hannah, who is still recuperating from gunshot injuries, was allowed by her doctor to briefly leave the hospital to see her mom.

Supporters recalled Rosita Furigay’s stint as as public servant, and her caring, but strict, ways.

From 2016 until 2019, Lamitan City was awarded the Seal of Good Local Good Governance (SGLG) by the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

“It pains us because she is one who can really help the people of Lamitan,” Victoria Siason, head of the Office of the Senior Citizens, said.

Mayor Roderick Furigay meanwhile called on authorities to conduct a full-blown investigation into the killing of his wife and longtime aide Victor Capistrano. Their daughter, Hannah, was also injured in the incident.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) meanwhile said it has transferred Chao-Tiao Yumol, the suspect in the fatal shooting at Ateneo de Manila University, to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Payatas.

QCPD Director PBGen. Remus Medina in a CNN News report said Yumol was transferred to the BJMP after a commitment order was released on July 29.

According to the police report, members of the QCPD Swat Team and Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit escorted Yumol for his medical examination before taking him to the BJMP.

The QCPD has filed murder and frustrated murder charges against Yumol. He is also facing complaints for carnapping and malicious mischief amounting to P80,000 before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office in connection with the fatal shooting.

He is set to undergo arraignment proceedings this week, the QCPD said.

On July 24, Yumol barged into the Ateneo graduation ceremony and opened fire, killing Furigay, Capistrano, and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.
