The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) expects heavy traffic with the resumption of face-to-face classes next month. At the same time, the MMDA dismissed as fake news an infographic posted on social media about the implementation of a new number coding scheme
“Before the election, we conducted a volume count, the average number is 400,000 vehicles, that is only 5,000 short of the pre-pandemic level of 405,000,” said MMDA chair Romando Artes said in interview with AB-CBN Teleradyo on Thursday.
“But let’s remember, there is no classes yet, so if there are face-to-face classes this June, we expect more and the 405,000 pre-pandemic level will be breached,” he added.
Artes said the volume of vehicles also went up during the two-year pandemic.
“Maybe, more or less about half a million vehicles were added on the streets-during that two year period, 60-70 percent of them entered Metro Manila or were here in Metro Manila, so let’s expect the traffic flow to be even heavier this June,” he said.
The MMDA chief is optimistic that the incoming administration would come up with a right solution to solve the traffic problem.
“In our opinion, there are two majors that the next administration should do. First, the improvement of the mass transportation system, because if our mass transport is good, we can avoid buying vehicles that will add to the volume and to the traffic on our streets,” he said. “Secondly, maybe decentralization, maybe there are industries or sectors that should be moved from Metro Manila to neighboring provinces. So that not everyone gathers here in Metro Manila,” he added.
“The infographic spreads false information with a new number coding scheme that will be implemented starting May 16. The MMDA reiterates that there is no change in the implemented scheme.”
“The implementation of the modified number coding scheme is still in place from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm every Monday to Friday, except during holidays.”
Although there were proposals of modification in the number coding scheme, the MMDA stated that none have been approved. “In the event of a change in policy, it must be approved by the Metro Manila Council, which consists of 17 mayors of Metro Manila.”
