The Women’s National Basketball League has picked a one-armed lady cager to become the league’s face and spokesperson in its effort to inspire more women in sports.
“It’s the ability that matters, not the disability,” the National Basketball League posted on its official page, naming Kat Tan as its women tourney’s ambassador.
“Kat is indeed an inspiration! She is a living proof that nothing is impossible indeed to those with self-will,” the post added.
NBL Executive Vice President Rhose Montreal said Tan is “the perfect choice for the post”.
Montreal even quoted Tan: “I may not be a top-ranked player or the best player in my team, but when I play—(it’s) all heart and dedication”
Montreal added: “Your team name speaks of your talent.”
Interestingly, Tan played for team Limitless in the recent WNBL 3×3 Tournament. Her team, which connotes endless possibilities and without borders, was not among the top finishers, but Tan drew the admiration of peers and league officials.
“Sobrang galing,” said Montreal in describing Tan, who may not have churned out monster statistics to reflect an outstanding performance.
Tan just being there playing with her one shooting arm, competing with able players was enough for her to provide inspiration.
Tan admitted she admired the late Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, so she was nicknamed the One-Armed Mamba. She even met and played with Kobe, the Black Mamba when the NBA superstar visited the Philippines in 2016.
Tan lost her left arm following a carnival ride accident when she was 10 years old. The brave young girl that she was, her will remained strong as she worked even harder. Basketball became her turf as she made it to the varsity team of her school.
She continued to exude the same confidence in the recent WNBL 3×3, topped by Uratex Dream.
“Kat, you just don’t know how you inspired lady ballers including the younger generations! You have my utmost respect and it was indeed an honor having you in the WNBL. Continue chasing your dream,” added Montreal.
