Members of the national obstacle sports team, led by Southeast Asian Games gold medallist Mervin Guarte, are set to go through a six-month training program in Baguio City this week.
This is to prepare them for a busy schedule that the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation has put for the rest of the year, now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing down.
Federation officials and their athletes discussed their coming activities during a face-to-face huddle with scribes Wednesday at the Rizal Park Manila Hotel yesterday in Luneta.
“Sa Saturday, akyat na kami sa Baguio, mag-bubble training kami doon for six months para sa aming mga events,” said Guarte, who won the 5-km event during the 2019 SEA Games.
The 29-year-old Guarte, who used to be a middle-distance runner in the national athletics’ team, is among a six-member group, which will go into high-altitude training activities in Baguio City.
Joining Guarte in Baguio City are Sherwin Manangil, Elias Tabac, Glorien Merisco and Tess Nocyao.
The POSF, headed by its president Alberto Agra, has rolled out its activities for the year with training and competitions that have been lined up starting next month.
These includes three inaugural events for ninja and OCR short athletes.
Lined up are the qualifying event for the Ultimate Ninja Athletic Association World Championship on March 4 to 6 at the Obstacle Sports Factory, and the Obstacle Course Race 400M and the OCR 800 on May 14 to 15 at the Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite, which will also serve as qualifier to the World Championships in Moscow, Russia late this year.
