Season 97 of NCAA limited to online events

The start of Season 97 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association on March 5 could once again be limited to online events.

The Mancom, headed by Dax Castellano of Season 97 host College of St. Benilde raised this possibility during a meeting last Friday.

The committee discussed the plans that the NCAA needs to come up with, now that the National Capital Region is on COVID-19 alert level 3, following a big spike in virus cases recently.

It was learned that many schools have not began their scheduled bubble training for student-athletes.

If the planned opening on March 5 pushes through, the league could limit their events to online activities involving taekwondo and chess, just like last year, along with skills challenges in basketball and volleyball.

Talks on holding regular events of basketball and volleyball were put forward during the meeting.

But school officials said that member teams may need at least six weeks of preparation.

For now, the mancom will consult with the Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases over their situation and plans.

The league has asked the IATF if they can be allowed to have scrimmages and face-to-face training.
