Junior standout Cocoy bags CTW tennis title

Bacolod—Junior standout Jufe Ann Cocoy turned back Shyryn Salazar, 4-1, to capture the women’s elite singles’ division in the recent CTW Philta Community Tennis Festival here at the NOTA Panaad Tennis Club.

Cocoy, who represented the country in the 2020 Junior Fed Cup pre-qualifying event in Jakarta, Indonesia, got back at Salazar who had defeated her 3-4 (4) during the round-robin preliminaries.

In the semifinals, Cocoy edged the youthful Maria Divinagracia, 4-2; while Salazar ousted Daveaine Gauran of Dumaguete City, 4-2.

Pete Rodriguez ruled the men’s elite singles in the nationwide tennis activity sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis association and organized by Philta-accredited Negros Occidental coach Juvan Divinagracia.

Over at the Silay Tennis Club in Silay City, ballkid Steven Tres Reyes scored a masterful 4-2 victory over Kristina Dante to capture the elite mixed singles festival division.

In the NCR leg, Jay Veran of Novaliches bucked fatigued after playing five straight matches en route to a 4-1 finals win past club entry Joshua Diva at the Dapitan Tennis Club in Manila.

Ezri Joy Oligo of Cainta stopped Muntinlupa’s Marianne Hipolito, 4-2, in the women elite singles.

The kick-off NCR venue at the Greenview Tennis Club in Fairview saw age grouper Dane Basijan deny Marianne Hipolito a first-ever women singles crown with a 4-3 (5) victory.

Iggy Illescas won the elite men singles with a 4-2 pressured win over Marlo Fortaleza in 2-leg NCR tournaments organized by Gerber Mamawal and Ronald Roces.
