The government should pursue the modernization of the Armed Forces since the troops need all the help that they can get if they were to defend the country against enemies, a party-list lawmaker said.
Rep. Manuel Cabotchan III of Magdalo party-list “reminded the military of their sworn duty to protect the people and commitment to preserve our democratic institutions.”
“Amid present challenges in our national security, may the AFP remain resolute in safeguarding our sovereignty and territorial integrity. And may the values of honor and loyalty to our flag deepen in every Filipino soldier’s heart,” said Cabotchan.
The modernization of the Armed Forces was delayed for several decades as the government focused on the Moro insurgencies.
It was only during the current decade that the Armed Forces was again equipped with more modern equipment, including 50-year-old former US Coast Guard Cutters that were re-armed and now being used as frigates of the Navy and a squadron of brand new armed supersonic jet trainers from South Korea.
The Army, on the other hand, received newly refurbished armed personnel carriers and tens of thousands of new rifles and handguns.
The Navy will also receive two brand new frigates that were purchased in South Korea
Cabotchan, a former Navy officer, expressed hope that the Armed Forces under the present government will receive the much needed support for its modernization and development.
“The government should be an instrument for the AFP to be capable in fulfilling its mandate. Instead of hindering the AFP’s performance of its duties, the government should be the one enhancing the capabilities and raising the morale of our military,” said Cabotchan.
“On our end, in the Magdalo we will continue to push for policies in the Congress that would strengthen our military and ensure the welfare of our soldiers, retirees, and veterans,” he added.
