A brewing storm, also known as a low-pressure area, could head for Davao del Sur on Wednesday as the province continues to wobble from the powerful earthquake on Sunday, the state weather bureau said Friday.
This, as another weather system started dampening the holiday merriment in parts of the predominantly Christian country of 106 million people.
The LPA was about 2,500 km east of Mindanao at 3 a.m. Friday and was expected to enter the Philippine area at the earliest on Sunday, said PAGASA weather forecaster Raymond Ordinario.
The country’s potential 21st storm this year will head for Eastern Visayas or Northern Mindanao, and could affect Davao del Sur, he told radio dzMM, beamed nationwide.
Davao del Sur was the epicenter of a magnitude 6.9 quake last Dec. 15, which left at least 11 dead, cracked some 14,000 houses and spawned around 960 aftershocks so far, according to officials.
A second LPA was spotted about 795 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 3 a.m., said Ordinario.
The weather disturbance on Friday will bring cloudy skies and isolated thunderstorms over Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, and Eastern and Central Visayas, he said.
But PAGASA said the LPA nearer to the country was unlikely to strengthen into a storm.
Meanwhile, western Luzon and Metro Manila on Christmas will experience generally fair weather that may be marred by isolated rains for up to 2 hours in the afternoon, said Ordinario.
