Dennis Orcollo of the Philippines sustained his fine form on Thursday, scoring a 9-4 win over Brunei’s Muhammad Azim Abu Bakar to advance to the men’s 10-ball singles quarterfinals of the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the Manila Hotel Tent.
Orcollo, who won a gold in the 2013 Myanmar Games, cruised to a 4-0 start and controlled the game throughout.
Still to finish was Luis Saberdo’s battle against Vietnam’s Pham Hoai Nam and Benjamin Gueverra Jr.’s mach against Tran Le Anh Tuan of Vietnam in the Round of 16 of the English Billiards men’s singles.
Ten-ball is a modern pool game that is very similar to nine-ball. But instead of nine it uses 10 balls with the 10 ball instead of the nine as the “money ball”.
Ten-ball is considered by most as a more challenging discipline than nine-ball. It is harder to pocket balls from the break shot with the more crowded rack.
Additionally, the initial shooter cannot win the game by pocketing the 10 on the break. Also, all shots must be called. Therefore, performing a string of break-and-runs on successive racks is more difficult.
Popularity of the game has risen in recent years as a result of concerns that nine-ball has suffered as a result of flaws in its fundamental structure. For example the ease with which players can often make balls from the break.
