Carlos Yulo fell short in his bid to sweep his three events in the men’s gymnastics competitions of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on a busy Tuesday evening after copping his second gold and adding two more silvers before an appreciative crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The 19-year-old Yulo tallied a 14.700 score from the judges to top the men’s floor exercise and easily put away the challenge of Thailand’s Tikumport Surintornta, who settled for the silver with 13.833.
Zur Bahrin Mat Asri of Malaysia took the bronze with 13.767.
But luck was not on Yulo’s side in the pommel horse, as his 13.233 was only good for a silver behind Malaysia’s Tan Fu Jie, who claimed the gold with a 13.967 score.
Dinh Phuong Thanh of Vietnam settled for the bronze with a 12.867 score.
Yulo later added another silver in the still rings after finishing at 13.733 behind gold winner Danh Nam of Vietnam (13.867).
Yulo had a 5.500 difficulty score and 8.233 in the execution from the judges, which was not enough to topple Dang’s scores in difficulty (5.700) and execution (8.167).
In the men’s floor exercise, Yulo, the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships gold medalist in floor exercise in Stuttgart, Germany, got a 6.200 difficulty score and 8.500 execution from the judges as he made a successful follow up on his first SEA Games gold in the Artistic Gymnastics men’s individual all around event on Sunday.
The Manila native thus dethroned compatriot Reyland Capellan, who was hoping to add a third career SEA Games gold in the same event.
Capellan, who was a back-to-back gold medal winner in the same event, missed out on the bronze as his 13.433 score was only good for fifth place.
A faulty landing in one of his attempts proved costly, as he failed to catch Zur for the bronze.
