Maids’ salary, perks upgraded

The salary of housemaids has been raised to P6,000 a month from P2,500, and they are now also entitled to many benefits under the law, according to the Department of Labor and Employment.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III says the housemaids’ wages have been adjusted following a wage order that took effect on Nov. 8 this year.

The wage order says the new monthly wage should be P6,000 for the housemaids working in the National Capital Region and in all first-class municipalities.

However, the salaries of housemaids working in the other municipalities will be raised depending on the agreement between the employers and the housemaids.

Bello says it will be difficult to go house to house to see if the employers are following the new salary rates for housemaids, but the housemaids may write a complaint before his department so his department can encourage the employers to respect the law.

The law says a housemaid is entitled to daily and weekly rest periods, board, lodging, medical attendance, coverage from the Social Security System, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG, five-day service incentive leave for those who have rendered at least one year of service and 13th-month pay for those who have rendered at least one month of service.
