The Manila City Hall allowed some street vendors in Divisoria, Manila to sell their wares along selected streets for the coming holiday season but with strict conditions to comply.
Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said he would allow these vendors for the sake of giving them income this Christmas season but not to sell there permanently.
He said the streets where the vendors could sell their goods were Carmen Planas, Tabora and some portion of Ilaya and Moriones streets in Binodo, Manila.
However, no street vendors would be allowed on major roads in Manila like Juan Luna street and Recto Avenue.
The Mayor warned that should vendors violate the conditions set by the Manila government to allow street vendors in selected areas, Domagoso said he would tear down the stalls and never allow them to sell again.
Among the conditions set by the city Mayor is that the streets should be open to vehicles while vendors must stay on the sidewalks.
“I will make their Christmas sad. We gave them the opportunity to sell on the condition that they observe discipline,” he said.
Another condition set by the city government was that their stalls should measure 1 meter by 1 meter. If vendors exceed the space allotted for them, it would be like they were mocking the government.
Domagoso said street vendors should police their ranks or would terminate the plan.
