With the All Souls’ Day long weekend just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to plan for a movie marathon of horror films that Netflix has in its lineup.

Here are a few suggestions under different subgenres to help you set the tone for the spookiest month of the year.

Paranormal phenomena

Frighteningly mysterious and unexplainable events are popular themes in the horror genre, which typically features ghosts and evil spirits as the source of terror in the story. This is evident in The Conjuring, where renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate disturbing events taking place in a secluded Rhode Island farmhouse.

Another good case in point would be Insidious: The Last Key. After receiving a call from a man who claims that his house is haunted, Elis Rainier, a parapsychologist, goes back to her home town and confronts the demon she set free years back.

Psychological thrillers

This subgenre offers a peek into the horrors and mysteries of the human mind. Characters gone mad are the focal point of this subgenre, as remarkably depicted in the classic film The Shining. The film follows the life of a family of innkeepers in an isolated snow-buried hotel. They fall victim to the hotel’s dark secrets and the father transforms into a homicidal maniac, obsessed with terrorizing his own family.

Another notable film that fits this category would be The Perfection, which features a disturbed musical prodigy, Charlotte. Too engrossed with the pursuit of perfection, she tracks down her old music school’s latest star, Elizabeth, and together, they follow a disturbing path.

Sci-fi monster movies

Science-fiction stretches our imagination into a world of futuristic technology and science or, in some cases, of a terrorizing phenomenon with scientific basis. In the case of World War Z, Gerry Lane must race against time to find a cure for the enigmatic virus that instantly kills people and transforms them into mindless creatures that eat human flesh.

Another is Alien vs. Predator, which brings to earth extraterrestrial beings, who battle it out among themselves, leaving a group of human researchers caught in the crossfire.

True crime

If haunted houses or alien life forms don’t give you a good scare, you might want to try movies about real-life criminals. Making a Murderer tells the dreadful story of Steven Avery with enough twists and turns that will leave you stunned by how violent and brutal humans can be.

The crimes of the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy are well-known, but Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes narrates crimes from the perspective of the convict himself. The film offers viewers an insight into the mind of an oft-cited charming killer.

Suspense series

For people who are more inclined to binge-watch a series with a continuing plot rather than a line-up of different movies, a Netflix original series that garnered a lot of praise is The Haunting of Hill House, which tells the story of a family with deep-seated trauma and forced to face the ghosts of their past.

Also, American Horror Story offers a different theme and story each season. With the recent release of season 8 (Apocalypse) on Netflix, viewers have several choices of stories to follow, from the typical haunted house to the creepy portrayal of carnival life.
