The names of lawyers who do not comply with the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education as mandated under the Code of Professional Responsibility and the Revised Rules of Court will be published in newspapers with general circulation.
This came after the high court has approved a resolution declaring that non-compliant lawyers will be given 60 days from the date of publication to submit proof of compliance.
The SC said that non-compliant lawyers who fail to submit the needed documents within the prescribed period will be declared delinquent and “shall not be permitted to practice law.”
The resolution granted the plea of the MCLE governing board in its Resolution No. 06-2019 on the publication of the names of MCLE non-compliant lawyers.
There are more than 40,000 lawyers in the Philippines.
MCLE is sanctioned by Canon 5 of the Code of Professional Responsibility which states: “A lawyer should keep abreast of legal developments, participate in continuing legal education programs….”
