The Philippine Sports Commission strengthened its linkages with local government units in Mindanao as it conducted its Sports for Peace programs in Maragusan, Compostela Valley and in Bukidnon Province.
Maragusan Municipal Mayor Maricel Colina-Vendiola graced the Ate-Kuya volunteers’ orientation at the Mayor’s Conference Room on September 27 followed by the Children’s Games held in Maragusan Central Elementary School on September 28.
Mayor Colina-Vendiola, thanked PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez for bringing the Children’s Games to their municipality.
“We are very thankful to Chairman Butch that PSC has come to our municipality and for supporting us with the Children’s Games,” she said in Filipino.
Colorful flaglets, courtesy of the Municipality of Maragusan LGU, adorned the playing venue.
“The colorful flaglets speak about the colors and vibrancy of the hosting,” PSC Mindanao cluster head Ed Fernande stated, praising the mayor for the elaborate preparations.
About 200 children and 20 Ate-Kuya volunteers had a fun-filled day playing tug of peace, mukhang kamatis, sack race, hug relay and balloon race, among others.
They received souvenir shorts and enjoyed the boodle fight during lunch. Maragusan also had a Saturday Sports Special, a sports program for the children.
Over in Bukidnon Province, the PSC also held a consultative sports planning last September 17 and 18, which was attended by 26 participants from 12 municipalities.
It was conducted alongside a grassroots coaching clinic on table tennis, athletics, taekwondo, boxing, and badminton from September 17 to 19, drawing 104 participants.
The Bukidnon stop, supported by Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. culminated with a Children’s Games at Folk Arts Theatre, Kaamulan Park, Malaybalay City that was filled with 500 kids who were assisted by 50 Ate-Kuya volunteers.
