Malacañang on Sunday extended its condolences to the family and friends of former Senator Rene Espina, who was credited for crafting the country’s first anti-drug law. He passed away on Friday at the age of 89.
Espina authored Republic Act No. 6425 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972 which was the precursor of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
He served as Cebu governor and secretary of the Public Works, Transportation and Communications during the Marcos administration.
At 33, he became the youngest administrator of the Social Security Services during the Macapagal administration.
“The Filipino people are indeed grateful for the long track record of public service Senator Espina gave to the nation,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said.
His remains are laid at Our Lady of China and Matteo Ricci Chapels in Sacred Heart Church in Cebu City for viewing.
