Atienza trains guns on illegal courier services

Buhay Party-list Rep. Joselito Atienza has vowed to look into reports of foreign “colorum” courier services putting Filipinos and their cargoes at risk.

“This I promise you. I will look into the matter. The e-commerce and courier industry is growing fast, and that there is need to protect the consumers and users of these products ordered online and delivered to their houses and offices,” he said.

At the weekly Nanka media forum in Quezon City, the party-list lawmaker reacted to reports of mounting complaints on social media against illegal courier services victimizing Filipinos who would order or have goods delivered through so-called “colorum” e-commerce agencies and courier services.

The industry is now worth at least P36 billion, Atienza said, adding that a new law must be passed to regulate these services.

He promised to dig deeper into the supposed “colorum” couriers in aid of legislation.

“If we need to craft a law to regulate the courier services just to protect the consumers and the small-time players in the industry, we will have to do it,” he said.
