LGUs urged to back renewable projects

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday urged local government units to band together in clusters to ensure continued supply of feedstock for waste-to-energy projects under a proposed bill.

Gatchalian proposed Senate Bill No. 363, or the Waste-to-Energy Act, to support the growth of WTE in the country. The bill seeks to provide a framework for the entire value chain of WTE facilities, and, in turn, ensure the uninterrupted supply of waste as feedstock.

“For example in Metro Manila, we can cluster North Metro Manila, South Metro Manila… The most difficult thing is how you convince the local governments… From a business standpoint, it’s so much uncertainty, so we want to eliminate uncertainty by allowing national government to be the initiator of this type of WTE projects,” he said during a forum on WTE organized by the Public Private Partnership in partnership with the Asian Development Bank.
