The US Open 2019 will begin on Aug. 27 and fans can’t get any more excited.

Novak Djokovic

Two tennis giants from two divisions, Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic, return to the court to defend their titles. Known for defeating tennis greats on their past runs, will they be able to do it again this year?

The month of August marks the beginning of the second half of the tennis grand slam season, and on the 27th, the US Open is scheduled to commence. Fans all around the world are more than excited to see their favourite tennis stars play and give it their all on the court.

This year in particular is an exciting season as defending champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka return to take the courts by storm. On one hand, Djokovic’s victory came as no surprise to tennis fans given the veteran’s record; while on the other hand, the young Osaka’s win over Serena Williams took the world by storm.

Will the two champs be able to defend their title? Only time will tell. In the meantime, learn more about the two 2018 victors below.

Novak Djokovic

16-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic seems unstoppable recently. He's currently the world's number one in the sport and he's not showing any signs of stepping down. The Serbian's well-known career record is nothing short of astounding: seven Australian Open Titles, five Wimbledon titles, three US Open titles, and one French Open title — and those are just the grand slams. If you count his ATP titles, well, it will take you good while to round them together.

In this past season alone, Djokovic has displayed a fantastic run. Last year, he dominated Juan Martin del Potro with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, set, claiming the US Open title. Roger Federer – considered the greatest tennis player of all time, was also defeated by the Djoker during this year's Wimbledon. Age is but a number for the 32-year-old Djokovic, who still continues to slay on the tennis courts.

Naomi Osaka

Everyone familiar with tennis probably knows who Naomi Osaka is. The young Japanese tennis player became the talk of the town when she won last year's US Open after she defeated the 23-time major tournament champion, Serena Williams.

Naomi Osaka

For those who may be unfamiliar with Osaka, she is not new to the sport. In fact, she has been around since 2013. Back then, the 16-year-old Osaka beat world number 19 Samantha Stosur in a tiebreak. Osaka slowly climbed up the tennis ranks the following years, making it to the top 50 in 2016, but hit a slump come 2017. In 2018, she won the US Open and this year, she won the recent Australian Open.

The competition has been really tight around Naomi and tennis contenders are all out to get her. During the last Wimbledon, fans were shocked after she suffered a first-round loss against Yulia Putintseva.

It’s no wonder that all eyes are on her this month. The current world number one needs to truly level up her game and give it her all if she wants to remain on her highly-coveted tennis throne.
