Olympian Jasmine Alkhaldi set a new national record after she snared a silver medal Saturday at the Hong Kong Open Swimming Championships 2019

Alkhaldi clocked a time of 25.66 seconds in the finals of the women’s 50m freestyle event to finish behind Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, who claimed the gold in 25.08.

According results posted online, Camille Cheng, another Hong Kong swimmer, took the bronze with 25.94

Alkhaldi, who has seen action in the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics, was seeded second going into the finals after submitting a preliminary time of 25.86.

Her clocking eclipsed the 25.67 second national record that she registered two years ago at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.

She is set to the lead the Philippine national swimming team’s campaign at home. Members of the national team will make their presence felt in the first Philippine National Open Swimming Championships, which is slated as a test event at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

The test meet will serve as the final qualifying meet for the 30th SEA Games.

Alkhaldi later settled for fourth in the women’s 100m butterfly finals, with a time of 1:02.12.

Earlier, Alkhaldi had a time 25.51 seconds during a short course meet in Germany.

But this was not recognized as a national mark, according to reports.
