PH tracksters ready to train at Clark oval

Members of the national athletics’ team are getting ready to move to Capas, Tarlac and start training at the newly built track oval inside the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.

The 45-strong pool, which just finished a four-month training stint in Lingayen, Pangasinan, are expected to begin their workouts at the NCC oval by Aug. 19.

Officials of the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association said this after the construction of track oval and its spectator stand was completed ahead of schedule.

Members of the national track team are currently getting ready for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

On the other hand, the aquatics center inside the NCC is almost done and needs only a few more days to be completed.

So far, only the United States members of the national team won’t be around when the members of the national squad get to try out the NCC oval for the first time.

Filipino-American standout Zion Corrales-Nelson will be doing her preparations in the US.

Corrales-Nelson, whose performance still needs to be certified by the PATAFA, is among the top bets in athletics in the SEA Games.

This was after Corrales-Nelson has gone past a 33-year-old Philippine national record that was set by Lydia de Vega-Mercado last May 23.

She has a clocking of  23.18 seconds during the West Preliminary National Collegiate Athletic Association Finals in Sacramento California.

Corrales-Nelson is currently being coached by Mike Gipson and Tony Sandoval of the University of Berkeley.

The puts Zion to the top of the SEA Rankings for 2019, making her a top candidate for the national team.

In the 100-meter dash,  Zion has timed 11.41 seconds in the finals after clocking 11.5 seconds in the heats.

The other is Kristina Knott, who recorded 11.44 seconds back in 2016. She also has her eyes on De Vega-Mercado’s Philippine mark.
