Fernandez rules Tiwi rapid chessfest

Dandel Fernandez of Maynilad Water Services Inc. captured the 10th leg National Executive Chess Championship dubbed as Coron Festival at the 24/7 Balikbayan Resort in Barangay Bariis in Tiwi, Albay over the weekend.

Fernandez tallied five points in the 6-round Swiss System rapid format competition followed by National Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of Talisay, Camarines Norte in second with 4.5 points in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned event supported by Mayor Jaime C. Villanueva and Tiwi Chess Club and organized by Alexis Orlain. Chief Arbiter is Alexander “Alex” Dinoy of the Chess Arbiter Union of the Philippines.

Noel Leron and National Master Glennen Artuz of Naga City, Camarines Sur scored identical four points to share the third and fourth place.

Trailing were 3.5-pointers Architect Marvid Zuniga and Nationa Master Carlo Lorena , Dr. Johnny Corrales (3 points),  Emil Valleza (3 points), Pedro Olaguer (3 ), Rodel Lasala (3), Ricardo Martin (2.5), Harold Alianza (2.5), Dr. Jenny Mayor (2.5), Albert Olavere (2), Melchor Jullado (1) and Jojo Capa (1).

Meanwhile, Mark Rodrigo prevailed via tiebreak the 2019 Concepcion Dos Chess Club Active Chess Championship at the Dawg’s Boardgame Cafe, Lilac Street, SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City.

Rodrigo, tied for first-second places with Narcisco Gumila 4.5 points apiece in the 30 minute time control event organized by Pastor Ranier Pascual and International Memory Champion Robert Racasa dubbed as God Father of Philippine Memory. With the highest tiebreak points, Rodrigo took the title while Gumila finished second.

Rounding up the top 12 winners were Fide Master Christopher Castellano (3rd); Pastor Ranier Pascual (4th); Genghis Katipunan Imperial (5th); National Master Romeo Alcodia (6th); Joseph Lawrence Rivera (7th); Ruel Sto.Domingo (8th)  April Joy Ramos Abudancia (9th); Raffy Lobitania (10th); National Master Rudy Ibanez (11th) and Salvador “Bobby” Dela Paz (12th).

 Ryan Carandang was the chief arbiter.
