The largest group of property developers pushed anew for a P270-billion funding scheme to narrow the 6.75 million housing backlog with the creation of the Human Settlements and Urban Development Department under Republic Act No. 11201.

The Chamber of Real Estate & Builders Associations Inc. welcomed the passage of the DHSUD after a 27-year wait to allow the government to better and more efficiently address the massive housing backlog.

Creba national chairman Charlie Gorayeb said the new department would be a game-changer as it would provide the huge housing problem the attention it deserved at the cabinet level.

“We are hopeful that housing will not only be elevated as a top government priority but also be given the support it needs in undertaking programs that will address, if not totally eradicate, the 6.57 million housing backlog,” he said.

Creba through its “5-Point Agenda for Housing” is pushing for “a home for every Filipino” by accelerating national housing production to t500,000 units a year over a period of 20 years.

Creba also renewed its call for the establishment of a Comprehensive Home Financing Program that will make all income-earning Filipinos entitled to fixed, low-interest, long-term housing loans whether or not they are members of the Social Security System, Government Service Insurance System or Pag-lBIG Fund.
