The Philippine Lady Volcanoes may have lost the Division 1 crown of the Asia Rugby Women’s Championship last Sunday to China.
But the team is confident that the competition they joined is another step forward for the Philippine Rugby Football Union.
General Manager Jake Letts said this following the Lady Volcanoes’ 0-68 setback at the Southern Plains in Laguna.
The Lady Volcanoes reached the finals following a 32-27 win over India in the semifinals.
“Coming into this competition we were ahead of India but behind Singapore, after last weekends result we stayed ahead of India and passed Singapore. China were very dominant, they proved a class above all and finished in first place,” said Letts.
China, though YuanYua Lu, displayed excellent speed and power in providing points during the game, before Yan Zhou and Weiyan Wang added further tries as China took a big lead into the break.
World Rugby Council Member and Philippines’ hooker Ada Milby was proud of her side despite the defeat.
The Lady Volcanoes have been on a steady rise over the last two years, successfully achieving two silver-medal finishes last year and winning one this year. The main aim for the program this year was to provide similar opportunities to what the national men’s team have had access to over the years.
Letts said the women’s program over the last two years has been boosted by the support of both MVP Sports Foundation through the company of First Pacific and the Philippine Sports Commission.
