The Presidential Commission on Good Government has asked the Office of the President to approve its proposal to sell one of three jewelry collections of former First Lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos through a public auction.
Based on the list provided by the PCGG, the Hawaii Collection under the safekeeping in the vaults of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas was worth P704.8 million.
The letter, dated Sept. 7, 2018, was sent to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, and Commission on Audit chairman Michael Aguinaldo.
Records of Civil Case No. 0141 showed there were three collections of jewelry seized from Marcos. The more valuable ones were the so-called Hawaiian and Roumeliotes collections composed of extravagant pieces and loose gemstones seized by Customs officials, and the “less fancy” Malacañang Collection consisting of trinkets and ornaments left behind by the Marcos family when they fled the country in February 1986.
PCGG also lined up for disposal real estate properties of the Marcos family and their close associates worth P336.014 million and shares of stocks in various corporations worth P40.35 million.
In all, the recovered ill-gotten wealth assets included in the planned auction are worth P1.081 billion combined.
CoA noted the slow disposal of these assets, saying the delays have adversely affected the PCGG’s goals and objectives “to augment the budgetary requirement of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
Of the nine real properties and 11 blocs of shares earlier identified for disposal, not one was sold in 2018.
“The accomplishments made per privatization plan were not sufficient enough to achieve their objective to privatize the assets under their administration, as most of the activities undertaken by the agency were not implemented,” the COA report read.
