From April 27 to May 23, 2019, the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) intercepted at least 278,850 kilos of solid waste coming from Manila Bay.
During the dry season, the lake level of Laguna de Bai naturally falls below the level of high tide in Manila Bay resulting to the backflow of seawater and pollution from the latter.
“We do not want the backflow to affect the water quality improvement so far of the Pasig River and even of Laguna Lake so we are doing our best to intercept the solid wastes given our limited resources,” said PRRC executive director Jose Antonio “Pepeton” E. Goitia.
The PRRC has been conducting cleanup operations along the 27-kilometer river using only two trash boats donated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sec. Roy Cimatu.
Today, May 25, the PRRC and DENR held massive cleanup operations at BASECO and Parola areas of Manila Bay and Pasig River.
